Core article: Creative personality BALANCE: Reaching your potential through right/left brain balance Print

The Reach Potential material has, as its central rationale, the necessity for inner creative balance within the brain if a person is to manifest what she or he most desires or dreams for life. So what do we mean by 'inner creative balance' and why is it so important? This article has been written to explain the importance of this capacity, which you automatically develop through using our techniques regularly.

Everything you deeply desire in life is a call from your soul (which we define as the source of your life's energy and all your consciousness) to have the life you really want. Whatever desire has led you to reading this article is another attempt on your part to find a path to your soul's dreams for at least one of the things that we as human beings crave: love, easy companionship, good health, freedom, enthusiasm, achievement, joy, inner peace, emotional and economic security, understanding, knowledge, upliftment, and so on.
And if you are honest about it, you will have achieved some success in these things over time. But rarely is success in meeting our needs or desires enough. Everyday you will still experience some degree of dissatisfaction or discomfort. This is the truly annoying part! No matter how hard we try or how desperately we dream there remains a frustrating mystery around why deeply satisfying, steady success - what we call heart-connected success - seems to have its limits.
The answer to this mystery can now be found in understanding (and then reprogramming) the limitations inherent in your creative personality style. The vast majority of people have an imbalance in how they create their lives and it is this problem rather than ineradicable limitation that causes people to fall short of the peace, health or success they want. The Reach Potential processes show you how to redress imbalance within the brain itself * and make manifesting what you want for yourself and others so so much easier. Balance brings soul power.

So what is creative personality style?

Plato said with truth: "The Soul is like a pair of winged horses and a charioteer joined in natural union." He was referring to abilities to imagine possibilities for something rationally better in the abstract sense (reason), and the capacity for emotion. The charioteer was regarded as the capacity for choice between these two horses: the free will.

In his view reason should take precedence over emotion but as we have later learned emotion is equally important in making good decisions.* If your heart does not agree, reason has no anchor and no driver.
We know this, but what Plato did not say is that for most people one of the horses' wings is clipped and the charioteer is forced to compensate for that disability. Hence you, the charioteer, are continually swerving off course in trying to reach your chosen  dreams and goals because of an over-dependence on either the rational or the emotional.

Which of one of your "horses" has its wings clipped depends on how you use the two sides of your brain to create what you want and work with life's problems. Your preference for using the creative powers of one brain hemisphere rather than the other leads to one of two kinds of creative personality style.

  • Some people are Sky Dreamers who use the right brain faculties and  the consciousness of upper chakra imagination and abstraction to see grand new possibilities at the expense of valuing the importance of getting things done in a grounded way that takes account of human limitations and relationship. Dreamers may have many wonderful and original thoughts, but their ways of implementing their plans ways often do not take account of others' perspectives. They unconsciously rub people up the wrong way through mental rigidity - and do not see the broader implications of their self-orientated desires on others' needs and values. This approach can lead to rejection or at worst catastrophe (You can see the financial collapse of September/October 2008 as the result of Sky attitudes!)
  • Others are Earth Doers who value grounded action at the expense of cultivating imagination and inspiration. Doers dismiss the power of dreams. They are pragmatists. They like to make things happen using what is already known. They are suspicious of creative solutions. They value working with others harmoniously over the freedom to be themselves. But they risk mediocrity and fear loss of emotional control so the life can be dull and restricted. Their consciousness is centred on the concerns of the lower chakras: security, safety, relationship and will. They are most unwilling to let go of their emotional prejudices about how people 'ought' to be in relationship.

To succeed at the highest level a person needs both Sky dreaming and Earth grounded action that takes account of others. For fulfillment, we need both the capacity to express our unique talents and perspectives and an ability to work cocreatively and harmoniously with others who have different values. Therefore both success and fulfillment  require a balanced dance in the moment between the right and left-brain hemispheres, and a utilization and respect for the needs and talents of upper and lower chakra consciousness (see Handbook).
The imbalance of creative style causes stress, discontent and often a feeling of self-dislike because of the failures that are inevitable because of one's particular imbalance. Life ends up as a treadmill of finding ways to relieve that stress as people try to gain inner peace healthily by taking up activities such as physical workouts, meditation or immersing themselves in a hobby or bury themselves in work. They attend personal and professional development workshops and employ good healers to release blockages. While these kinds of activities are essential aspects to creating an enjoyable and effective life they alone do not create a continuous state of inner peace nor do they ensure whole of life fulfillment. You must address imbalance moment by moment so that you maintain a continuous sense of wellbeing.
The imbalances in creative consciousness also have a profound effect on how you think, what you value, how you respond, and especially on relationship conflict. Some people are overly mental, some too emotional, some rely on intuition at the expense of practical action. Some deal with imbalance by avoiding "being themselves" while others refuse to commit to anything that might cause stress. A full description of this problem follows below.

Creative personality differences in detail
To distinguish the two different styles of personality, we refer to dreamers, those having a right brain/upper chakra awareness, as having a Skywalker perspective, while the doers, those with a left brain/ lower chakra consciousness, we call  Earthdwellers. These creative perspectives have a positive and negative aspect, a helpful and an obstructive side, when handling the challenges of life.

Skywalker perspective
People who tend to view life and its challenges through a right-brain perspective are often referred to as “creative” because they enjoy discovering new information and creating original perspectives. They tend to be researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators, artists of all kinds, mystics and visionaries. They like self-expressive communication. They love new knowledge.
This perspective has personality implications. The right-brained sky outlook in its positive, elevated form is expansive, freedom loving, adventurous and trusting of universal abundance. Anything is possible and energy is abundant. Images and possibilities rush mind. When we are in Sky mode, we are dreamers who fly above the terrain of ordinary life in search of future knowledge, future powers. The Sky in us glories in space and time travel, and when drawn down from the other worlds, we yearn to see life as theatre where we may strut the stage as kings, queens, heroes and movie stars, bejewelled and admired. The positive Sky speaks with authority and pithy accuracy when it operates out of higher knowledge accessed through the upper chakras. It knows what is true and what is not. It can also have a sense of divine wonder beyond words and knows the celestial music of the spheres. It is out of this consciousness that great leaps in human knowledge and understanding are made. When Sky raises its energetic frequency, it is the source of divine inspiration and wholly new understandings.
On the other hand in its negative, lower frequency aspect, Sky can be confused, overwhelmed and fragmented as one idea follows too quickly on the heels of another. There is too much energy to contain. Overwhelm is the result. In its extreme form, too many projects are accepted, then abandoned or never satisfactorily completed. A rosy glow surrounds new ideas, but such ideas can be delusional rather than grounded in that the right brain is not geared to contained analysis of what actions need to be taken step by step to actualize the conception. Sky may fix upon a mental position with a rigid obsessiveness that nullifies its inherent truth. These characteristics naturally have a negative impact when the Sky Dreamer tries to bring their concepts to life in the world.
In addition, Sky relationship skills are weaker than its Earth partner so it can appear aloof and unrelated. Or it may be arrogant in its certainty that it has greater access to higher truths. In this state, Sky can be so brutally honest it alienates: the truth of its message is lost because of lack of empathy for the receiver. The lack of empathy means that Sky types tend to be unaware of their personal impact in community.
Sky can also become so frustrated at its lack of power in the context of sustaining its needs in relationship that it resorts to withdrawal from close relationships altogether. Sky Dreamers often have commitment problems. Underlying the apparent arrogance or withdrawal is a sense of victimhood and anxiety about being able to communicate effectively.

Earthdweller perspective
Left-brain orientated individuals are seen as the workers in life, putting more value on doing for others rather than dreaming for themselves. They value experience over theoretical knowledge or originality. For this reason they are regarded as less ‘creative.’ In fact this is not so. Earth creative style works with human and earthly limitation to find new ways to work with what already exists. They are very flexible in using solutions that already exist. When you are in Earth perspective you are manifesting tangibly through grounded action what you wish to create. You will use already known systems to do so. Naturally even those who prefer a Sky perspective to dealing with daily reality will find that in some areas of life where they are most interested they will be quite Earth.
The Earth perspective in its positive aspect is less spectacular than Sky. The Earth perspective has a strong human component. The relationship aspect of choices and decisions is highly valued. Earth thinking takes account of others, and its heart rests in what will create an abundant sense of physical comfort and wellbeing for itself and all those it cares for. Earth perspective may lack originality and keep low to the ground, but there is an immense comfort in knowing that its practicality will feed the body and provide the warmth needed for life in the here and now. Earth visions are for those they love and for humanity as a whole.
The left brain with its step-by-step thinking, its persistence, and its categorizing has the great advantage of transforming the energy of dreams into reality even if the dreams seem more mundane. Earthdwellers tend to enjoy limitation because of the strength and power that overcoming it brings. Earth is concerned with present and long-term security, practicality and the distribution of effort to take account of limitations of time, space and resources.
The Earth perspective is contained rather than expansive. It creates containers into which vast universal energy can flow and be held. Unfortunately when Earth turns sour she becomes narrow-minded, nitpicking, pessimistic and burdened. The practicality becomes a wet blanket and the concern for others is a form of control full of "oughts" and "shoulds" rather than an expression of love. Earth attitudes tend to martyrhood, and in this it can become self-righteously supportive of dysfunctional relationships.
Earth love is profound and flexible but it is weakened by unexamined sentimentality about traditional or rigid understandings of family and other relationships. For this reason, Earthdweller tend to be easily hurt; they personalize objections. They handle anger badly in that they tend to repress and rationalise it. However, woe betide you if you cross Earth's undeclared boundaries once too often: you will not be easily forgiven!
You are likely to identify with both aspects of Earth and Sky in your own personality. However, although we have both polarities inherent in each of us (and will change perspective according to the specifics of a situation) we tend to adopt one perspective more naturally than the other. The problem with not identifying and rectifying that imbalance is that it leads to failure in those areas of life and endeavour where the opposite polarity skills and perspective is necessary.  The key to much greater success is therefore to clear imbalance in your own consciousness. Balance creates the power in your own life of the visionary leader who is also a pragmatist. Dreams become real.
