Releasing resistance and PROCRASTINATION : FREE sample visualization Print

The path to self-expansion and greater wellbeing is never straight and horizontal!  It requires effort (but not struggle) to climb the hills, read the signposts, make choices at the crossroads.

And as we are faced with these challenges and choices, resistance and doubt sets in. Should I really go that route? Should I take that opportunity? Is it worth developing that skill to participate in life further?  At the root of all these doubts is fear of change: we pretend that we haven't the power to succeed but the truth is that we are so used to the devil we know that we fear meeting "the angel" we don't know. And our brains are programmed to keep travelling down the old (ineffective) ways of doing things.

In short, at every level we procrastinate and resist. Visualizations for self-directed change are a magic ingredient of the Reach Potential program. These train your unconscious mind to respond to challenges of life in a more effective way.

It's true that it is a good idea to check out the validity of any fear or doubt, but any kind of mental or emotional rigidity that stops you moving forward is not a good default mechanism. When you need to break away from procrastination and jump into the water of life the  visualization below will strip away the illusory anxiety so you can be open to real choice.

Note: One visualization practice will not go far, but if you repeat them regularly a subtle but profound change occurs within weeks. Use this one with focus.

Choose the area you want to move forward in but know you are putting off. Do the visualization several times over and watch your sense of motivation improve. If possible, act immediately you have done the visualization,   It is designed to help release any tension you hold as a means of protecting yourself against internal or external difficulties associated with change. This kind of unconscious anxiety causes people to freeze, procrastinate or become stubborn. Letting go of it allows you to move forward into new learning, new possibilities and insights with ease.

Read the instructions slowly over with your eyes open until you remember the sequence. Practise this until it becomes easy to remember and you can do it with your eyes closed. Then use it at those times you notice resistance or procrastination.

  • Find a comfortable, uninterrupted space to sit or lie down. Ensure your body is warm and well supported.
  • Close your eyes gently. Relax your whole body as best you can. Let your breathing become a fraction deeper and slower.
  • Once you are relaxed, imagine that you are transported to a most beautiful garden. It is a large garden, but secluded and safe. It is late summer. You notice that the sun is gently warm. The shade under the trees is pleasantly cool.
  • Imagine that you find a blanket or cloak to wrap yourself in. Put it on. It makes you feel completely protected and soothed. Enjoy it for a moment.
  • Look around this garden. What do you see? Tall leafy shrubs? Roses? A small vegetable garden with herbs? Fruit trees with large sweet fruit? Maybe there is a fishpond or small fountain? Maybe there are none of these things but still this garden is magical.
  • The garden may be one you know or knew well. Look at the colors, the many different sights. Smell the fragrant air. Flowers and fruit seem to invite you to touch them, smell them, and taste them. Take your time. Wander around this garden, sensing it and enjoying it.
  • Now find a place to sit comfortable or to lie down. Imagine you are doing that. Do you see yourself doing that? Or do you prefer to feel yourself in that position? Make a choice based on which is most easy for you: seeing or feeling.
  • Begin to observe or sense the points of tension in your body that arise from the resistance or procrastination you are experiencing. Notice where that is? Your stomach? Your shoulders? Your jaw? Neck? Hands? Let your mind check out your whole body.
  • Pretend now that the earth below you is magically drawing this tension down and away … down and away... Relax even more as the earth draws this tension away.
  • Now you see or feel a bubble around you. It is comfortable inside the bubble: it is your personal space bubble. Around this bubble is a skin, a skin that is protecting you.
  • But you notice that it is slightly murky, or it seems to be distorting the view. Inside this bubble you cannot see the garden as much as you would like to. You know nothing out there is ugly or frightening. There is no need to protect yourself from it. Everything is beautiful.
  • You decide you would like to release this skin so that you can enjoy the garden more, see more clearly. You make this choice.
  • Place your hands on the skin or shell of the bubble. Let it melt it away. Perhaps you want to break it gently. Whatever you choose, make it happen. Use your will to make it so.
  • As you step beyond the bubble, stretch out your hand to touch something your saw before in the garden. Notice it is far more radiant, more vivid than it was before.
  • Then you notice something even more wonderful. You notice you too are more radiant, more alive, and more clear in mind and heart. You notice you are radiating in this garden like the life around you. You are at one with the garden. You feel free, safe and able to move around with greater ease and impact.
